Vitamin C

Vitamin C Skin Care and Stretch Mark Prevention

The Role of Vitamin C

Vitamin C, or L-ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble nutrient found in fruits and vegetables which has long been known as an essential nutrient for good health and a popular remedy for the common cold.  Vitamin C is an organic compound, just like all other vitamins, and is crucial in a well-balanced diet to support cellular health, promote longevity and prevent the deterioration of vital tissues and organs.

It is a powerful anti-oxidant, meaning it can inhibit the oxidation of other molecules in the body.  Oxidation produces free radicals in the body that damage cells, which is ultimately what leads to aging, disease, and declining health.

In addition to be being an incredibly important part of our diets, Vitamin C also plays a very important role in maintaining healthy, young, resilient looking skin. The most important and most abundant protein in humans is collagen. It provides the framework for every tissue in our bodies; from brain to kidney to liver to bones  and of course the skin. It provides the structural integrity to our organs and the structures that support them.

As vitamin C levels diminish with the demands of pregnancy, the mother’s skin becomes at risk for development of unwanted stretch mark scarring. Vitamin C is integral to skin health as it is necessary for ensuring the appropriate production and cross linking of the collagen to maintain the structural integrity of the skin.

The only efficient way to provide adequate supplementation to the skin during pregnancy is by topical application.  There are many hurdles with topical delivery of vitamin C so that it penetrates the skin in  meaningful amounts to have any beneficial effects. Vitamin C is a very unstable molecule, extremely susceptible to heat, light, air and moisture. The presence of any of these can completely degrade the vitamin C into an inactive and ineffective form in minutes.

Fortunately, based on years of bench research on topical formulation of vitamin C, there is now a safe effective and stable formulation that provide the skin the nutrients necessary for maintaining healthy skin during pregnancy.

ProCollagen-C’s™ revolutionary new formula delivers Vitamin C to the skin that is actually absorbed and utilized like never before.
